Style: Contemporary and Classical

Poems must be your original work, currently unpublished, and in English. Please limit your submission to 39 lines of single-spaced text for form poems. Entries may reflect current vernacular and moods, but the jury reserves the right to reject offensive material. Finalists chosen to perform their work will be contacted by email.


Open to public high school students and recent graduates from Washington, D.C., Montgomery County, and Prince George's County.


The jury will be composed of experts and professionals, including professors of English and published authors.


Entrants must be currently enrolled or recent graduate from one of three listed public school districts. Please complete registration and submit your work by following this link: Registration and Submission “Spoken Word” poets are advised to include a link to their work on YouTube or some other website. Finalists will be contacted by email.  

Entrants retain copyrights they have in the poems submitted. Participants in this contest grant Arts In Motion (AIM) the right, license, and ability to use and publish all submitted poems (in complete form or in excerpted form) on the AIM web site and in other media.

Second Place: $250
Third Place: $100
Honorable Mention: $20
